Contrary to Rumors, We’re Not Going Anywhere!

We just wanted to take a moment a clear up an untrue rumor that has been going around about Gardner’s, started by a competitor of ours.

Basically, a competitor was telling people that walked into their store that Gardner’s Mattress & More has been sold to Wolf Furniture. That is entirely false. What IS true is that Gardiner’s Furniture in Maryland has been bought by Wolf’s.

The Maryland store with a similar sounding name is the one that was acquired, not Gardner’s.

While we’re sure that the Wolf’s Furniture/Gardiner’s Furniture merger is a good business choice for them, we’re even more confident in our ability to provide outstanding value and customer service to all of Lancaster and surrounding areas. Especially since we do things the old fashioned way: Through honesty and hard work, one customer at a time.

So No Worries: Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store for the past 5 years is not going anywhere. In fact, we’re busier than ever, wrapping up our 25th anniversary celebration. $25 Select Pillows, Sheets and Frames and 25% off all other accessories. Stop by and sign up for a chance to win a $500 Visa Gift Card! Our Anniversary Event ends on August 9th and after that, it’s business as usual here at Gardner’s Mattress & More.

On the Cool Check

Although mattresses come in all shapes, sizes and styles, one thing remains fairly consistent: Cool Sleeping technology.

With the introduction of Memory Foam and all of its touted benefits, one problem stood out with the new technology. The mattresses were hot. Heat would well up underneath the sleeper only to cause discomfort and disturb one’s sleep. As time passed, incremental changes were made to existing technologies and new technologies were researched. Today, we see the benefits of that research.

There are a variety of materials available now to savvy sleepers, either built into the mattress or as an accessory. Although the differing materials are called different names, they all add up to a more comfortable sleep. Let’s go over some of the newest types of cooling technology.

Cool Action™ Dual Effects® Gel Memory Foam from Serta

Serta has been using its cooling Gel Memory Foam for about 5 years now and it’s been very successful. While not as cool-to-the-touch as other, newer technologies, it does its work under the sheet and mattress surface. As body heat sinks into the foam, the gel beads work to push the heat out from underneath you and can give you a light, airy sleep surface. Available in the iSeries and iComfort lines and is one of the highest selling consumer mattresses in the world.

Outlast from PranaSleep

Outlast boasts that its material was “Tested in space and right here on earth” and has the distinction of being developed by NASA for their space suits. Tempur-Pedic’s Breeze line utilizes a spray that coats the outer sleep surface. PranaSleep uses it in a different way as it’s woven in with the top layer’s fabric. As seen in the diagram to the left, the Outlast material actually stores body heat AND distributes it away from the body, as needed. Indeed, it is a “smart” fabric that relies on your body to tell it what to do.

Dri-Tec from BedGear

Used in their mattress protectors and pillows, the Dri-Tec material performs in concert with other technologies to provide a ventilated, moisture wicking and airy product. The days of searching for the “cool side of the pillow” are over, as BedGear’s products cool from day one. It’s quite a wonderful product and is available at Gardner’s.

Bamboo is a natural way to get that cool feel and is usually found in sheets. A Bamboo sheet set is well ventilated and durable. Many people have come to prefer Bamboo sheets over cotton due to the similarities in feel, with the added benefits of temperature control. Our Bamboo DreamFit sheets are a popular seller, as they should be– they’re fantastic!

Cotton & Wool

cotton-vs-wool-2Keeping with the natural material concept, some mattress companies use cotton and wool on the top mattress surface for cooling and moisture control. Cotton gives the traditional, soft feel and wool actually works in the same fashion as other cooling materials. Great for temperature control and all natural, these two materials have been around for thousands of years for a reason. They just feel right.

Tencel is another natural fiber. It is derived from the Eucalyptus tree and is ground down to a pulp and converted into a thread. Textiles of tencel are more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen. You may have heard of Tencel as it’s traditionally found in finer women’s garments. In the past few years, however, it has made its way into the mattress world. It can be found in Serta’s “Profiles” and “Directions” lines and in our popular Tencel Sheet set from Malouf.

At the end of the day, you may need a lot of help controlling your temperature or just a little. Even if you don’t sleep warm at all, these materials can help you feel more comfortable in bed and promote a great night’s sleep. If you have questions, or would like to feel samples of any of the materials listed in this post, feel free to stop by and talk with one of our Sleep Consultants. We’re here to help you wake up happy and pain free, and have been doing so for the past 25 years!

25th Anniversary Event

Customer Service PromiseAnniversary Logo

It’s hard to believe 4 years have passes since we opened up our sleep shop on Plaza Boulevard and 25 years since Jim Gardner founded the original Gardner’s at the Regency Shopping Center. The original store had tons of bedroom furniture and accessories, as well as a robust selection of Waterbeds (remember those?!) and was one of the first in Lancaster County to carry a small upstart mattress brand called Tempur-Pedic.

Things have changed since those early days but one thing that remains is our commitment to Helping You Wake Up Happy and Pain Free. We don’t do the usual commission races and daily salesperson specials that our competition enjoys. We listen to what you need and use our vast knowledge base to pair you up with the sleep system that you need.

To celebrate our 25th Anniversary, we’re running a special sales event. Basically, everything but our mattresses are on sale.

  • $25 Basic Pillows, Frames, Sheet Sets and most mattress Foundations!
  • 25% off Premium Pillows, Frames, Sheet Sets, Mattress Protectors, Headboards and Motion Bases!
  • $25 Gift Card to Starbucks, Amazon, iTunes or Dunkin’ Donuts w/ purchase of $999 and up!
  • Enter to win a $500 Visa Gift Card!

It really is one of the best Specials we’ve ever run. Stop by either of our Sleep Shops to learn more and find the perfect match. We’ll help you save a bunch of money as well. This special runs throughout the Summer and ends on August 8th.

Summer Pallet Projects

We have a wide selection of bedroom and sleep accessories here at Gardner’s: Adjustable Foundations, Pillows, Sheets, Frames and every type of Mattress you could think of. Those mattresses are delivered every week via tractor trailer to our warehouse at our Plaza Boulevard location. Sometimes these deliveries come with an added bonus: Wooden Pallets!

Ok, that was a hard sell with the exclamation point, wooden pallets aren’t very interesting…. Unless you’re crafty and need a DIY project for the Summer. These leftover pallets could be transformed into almost anything you could think of. Best of all, if you have a truck or van to remove them, go for it. Free pallets for you!

The Internets are filled with crafty ideas of the wooden pallet variety… I won’t go into detail, as a simple Google search will give you 1 Million+ results, but I will highlight a few of my personal favorites.

First off, it helps to know how to identify a potential pallet. You probably wouldn’t want to build a coffee table out of a pallet that was used for hauling chemicals around and luckily there are markings to look for.

Now that we know to look for a code and the two big no-no’s (Methyl Bromide and Painted/Colored Wood Pallets), it’s time to start the project! Note that Gardner’s does not receive any chemicals so in our pallet pile the only thing you should look for is the MB code.

Here’s a few neat ideas to get you started. There are thousands of other ideas out there, take a look and let us know if you find anything you’d like to try.

Have you done something like this already? Share a photo with us on our facebook page, we’d love to see what our crafty customers are up to!

Blue Light Blues

As we learn more about exactly how blue light disrupts our natural ability to produce Melatonin, and in turn robs us from the sleep we need, more products are popping up that claim to help us overcome our sleepless nights. The idea has been around since 1958 in regards to marine animals, however it has made a comeback in the Digital Renaissance that we currently reside.

The concept is, any blue-tinted light that your brain processes after a certain hour of the day actually tricks your brain into thinking it’s much earlier in the day than it really is. This delays the Melatonin production in your brain and, in turn, the normal chemical function of a healthy brain. We need Melatonin to fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

The main culprit of this deficiency is gazing upon your glorious cell phone before you go to bed. Watching television or screen time in front of a computer also can trick the brain.

So, instead of picking up a book (remember those) an hour before bedtime, technology has begun to catch up with the preliminary research.

Backyard astronomers have always used a flashlight with a red-tinted filter to make their way around their outdoor workspaces, as the red wavelength is easier on the eyes. Instead of a normal flashlight, which would cause the eyes to constantly readjust, a red-tinted light is a happy medium between seeing what you are doing in the dark night sky and not disrupting your sight.

So now we have a range of accessories and Apps to help filter that nasty blue light out. One company now sells Orange-Tinted glasses as a way to reduce those blue waves, while also allowing oneself to look totally cool like Bono from U2. Another App developer has a free product called “Twilight”, an Android App that can be programmed to gradually eliminate the blue light from your screen at certain times of the day. I use this app on a daily basis and it makes nighttime browsing easier on the eyes. It seems to do what it advertises… I even find myself dreaming more and feeling a bit more rested on a day-to-day basis.

So while the science is still streaming in, it does seem that living in these technological times has some downsides. Our sleep shouldn’t be affected, however it’s obvious that it is.

Have you tried any “Blue Light” apps or products? If so, let us know in the comments section or on our Facebook page.

The Dream Room – Only at Gardner’s!

The Dream Room at our Outlet and Clearance Center, on Lincoln Hwy East (next to the Adidas Outlet and Dickey’s BBQ)

One thing that separates us from the Big Box competitors, besides our transparent pricing policy, our Sleep Assessments, our outstanding Customer Service, winning Lancaster Newspaper’s “Reader’s Choice” Award 5 years in a row and our witty, handsome sales team, is The Dream Room.

The Dream Room is a unique find in the sea of mattress shoppes because the philosophy behind it is simple: Try Before you Buy.

We know how difficult it is to sort through the task of buying a new mattress. With so many unique and varied options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with data, propaganda and overbearing, pushy salespeople who don’t see clients walking through their front doors, they see big floppy dollar signs. We do things a bit differently here at Gardner’s. By addressing individual concerns one may have (allergies, hot sleepers, acid reflux, etc.) and matching you up with your best options, we take your sleep very seriously. Once you narrow your choice down to one or two options, you still may not know if it’s the right choice for you. This is where Gardner’s Dream Room comes in handy.

The process is simple. Let us know which  mattress you’d like to try before you buy. A $50 deposit (which acts as a deposit on whichever mattress you choose) is placed and an appointment is made. We suggest booking 1-3 hours for your appointment. On the day of your appointment, we’ll set up the Dream Room with your preferred mattress. All the sheets and pillows are provided, although some people like to bring their own pillows. When you arrive, you’ll be shown to the Dream Room and given the privacy to converse with a spouse, watch some TV, read, or simply take a nap! You’d be surprised at the number of customers who have fallen asleep while testing out mattresses!

A few tips for your time in the Dream Room: As you test out the mattress, feel for pressure points and support of the mattress, as well as how your pillows work with the mattress. A good pillow is an important part of a new mattress. Try out the adjustable foundation, lift your head and feet up to a “Zero Gravity” position to feel the pressure leave your lower back. You may not want to purchase one, but at least you can say you’ve experienced one!

If the mattress you’ve tested feels supportive and comfortable, and once all your questions are addressed, let us know if you’re ready to purchase it. It’s an important decision that should be made with your health and comfort in mind.

As a “Cherry-On-Top” bonus, every mattress purchased through the Dream Room process comes with a 1 Year Comfort Guarantee, backed by Gardner’s.

Read more about the Dream Room here, give us a call or stop by one of our showrooms to take a tour and get ready to wake up happy and pain free!

More PranaSleep at Gardner’s

As you may have known, our Gardner’s location on Plaza Boulevard now carries PranaSleep brand Latex Mattresses. Combining a triple-layered Performance Core, a luxurious Comfort Layer and NASA-developed Outlast material cover, PranaSleep has created a sublime sleeping surface.

One thing that sets the PranaSleep sleep system apart from it’s competitors is the EuroSlat Foundation. Made in Germany, this special foundation features a slat system that adjusts in the lumbar position for firmness and extends the life of the mattress by using bowed beech-wood slats to absorb energy that would normally end up in the mattress, compressing the materials inside.

“PranaSleep has made a big difference in my life and when anything makes a big difference in my life, I like to tell people about it. My wife at first said endorsing a mattress is a little off the mark for a yoga teacher. Then we got PranaSleep for our house and she slept on it. All of a sudden it was, okay, let’s endorse PranaSleep.”

Introducing Vispring Handmade Mattresses

Vispring Luxury Beds have been on the forefront of superior mattress craftsmanship. Using premium materials including cashmere, silk, and Shetland wool, each Vispring mattress is meticulously constructed by men and women who have tempered their craft through years of training.

Each mattress is hand-stitched, including a side-stitching technique that takes years to master, and gives the mattress an exquisite, tailored finish. Most importantly, side-stitching gives the mattress edges a strong and supportive strength that others accomplish by using metal rods or foam incasements.

Not only are the materials of premium quality, they are all-natural as well. Vispring does not use synthetic foam or glue and contain twice as much upholstery as most other mattress brands.

In 1901, Vispring pioneered the Pocket Spring which has made a resurgence in the past few years with mass produced mattresses.

The mattress is created with you in mind, customized to your preferences and backed by a 30-day in-home-trail and a lifetime warranty. Should the mattress ever fail through faulty workmanship, Vispring will repair or replace your mattress. Every Vispring mattress is guaranteed to stand the test of time.

We have these wonderful mattresses set up on our showroom floor and they are ready to try out! You can really see the quality of each mattress…. they are solid and simply fantastic to look at! The Plaza Boulevard Gardner’s location is the only store in Pennsylvania that you can find these handcrafted wonders. Introducing PranaSleep Latex Mattresses

We’re proud to introduce PranaSleep brand mattress sets, available at Gardner’s Mattress & More. PranaSleep is an addition to our growing line of latex mattresses and offers great pressure relief and support, as well as the latest in temperature control fabrics.

PranaSleep was founded in 2004 and built upon the Schiller family’s 40+ years of experience in the mattress industry. From the PranaSleep website:

“Jay Schiller, a pioneering retailer in the industry, founded his mattress company with two guiding principals: always offer the highest quality at a fair price, and treat people the way we would want to be treated.

In 2003 Stephen Schiller, 2nd generation owner, built on his 20+ years of experience and began to develop PranaSleep.”

What makes PranaSleep different from our current lineup? PranaSleep’s latex is manufactured with a proprietary-formula: It uses three times the natural rubber as ordinary Talalay latex and offers a perfect balance of support and comfort. The top layer of the mattress uses a NASA-developed material called Outlast, which contains micro-capsules that are applied to the threads and woven into the top quilt of the sleep surface. This material stores heat when needed and either disperses it or recirculates it back to you… depending on the conditions inside your room. This provides the best temperature control of any mattress available on the market today and ensures that you get a comfortable sleep, night in and night out.

Available in 12″, 13″ and 15″ thicknesses, each mattress addresses specific needs of every individual. PranaSleep latex mattresses can be bought as a mattress or mattress set. The foundation options include a traditional foundation or with adjustable wooden slats to maximize comfort.

Contact us at the store or stop by and try one out for yourself! Gardner’s is Pennsylvania’s sole provider of PranaSleep latex mattresses and we take that privilege seriously. For someone looking for a mattress that will stand the test of time, PranaSleep is sure to help you wake up happy and pain free!

Reorganized, Re-energized!

Reorganized and Re-energized! The warmth of Spring can’t come fast enough! I don’t know about you but I sure am tired of the Winter Blues. So much so that we’ve turned our Cabin Fever energy into something positive: A new layout for our Plaza Blvd location!

If you’re familiar with our store, you know that we have a wide variety of mattresses to choose from: Traditional Innerspring beds, Hybrid beds, Memory Foam, All-Latex Foam and even a new category: Cooling Gel Beds. As we added new lines to the floor, we realized a trend was developing. Most of the new lineup falls into an Organic/Natural category. Soooo…..

The Plaza Blvd store is now made up of two sections: Organic/All Natural on one side and Memory Foam/Hybrids on the other. You’ll still find the top selling National brands such as Serta and Tempur-Pedic, however we’ve expanded our Gold Bond selection to include more pocketbook friendly choices. Great, all-natural beds that are perfect for kids, guest rooms and even adult couples. You’ll get a great quality mattress set, with no harsh chemicals or plastics, at an affordable price.

We’re also increasing our popular Pure Latex Bliss lineup to include a few more choices, and the great organic mattresses from Savvy Rest are still here, waiting to be customized! Sometime soon we’re going to introduce the Prana brand beds, another latex choice as well as luxury mattress brand Vi-Spring, from England.

With all of these changes and additions, it’s no wonder that Gardner’s has become a unique destination for mattress shoppers… we’ve had folks from Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and New York travel just to see what we have to offer.

It’s an exciting time for us at Gardner’s and 2015 looks to be a great year for anyone looking for a new mattress purchase. Contact us by phone, email us, check out our facebook page for more updates or just stop by sometime and we’ll be happy to show you why Gardner’s has been voted Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress store 5 years in a row by Lancaster Newspaper readers.
