Protecting your mattress from the dirtiest thing in the house…you!

Time for some tough love. Humans are disgusting animals. We sweat, shed hair and dander, and expel, excrete, and secrete lots of unmentionable, disgusting odors and fluids. Frankly the heaviest beds that our delivery guys have to lift are the old ones that come out of people’s houses, as over the years they’ve increased in weight from the accumulation of skin cells and general grossness.

A mattress is an investment. An investment in your health, sleep and overall well-being. You need to protect it – from you. Sure you could go to bed in a space suit or haz-mat suit, but this wouldn’t be very comfortable, so I’ll explain the basics of protecting your bed.

Mattress protectors and encasement products are they way to go. For the most part all protectors basically do the same thing, prevent liquid and dander from getting into the bed while still being breathable and letting air though.

  • Mattress Protector – 1-Sided A mattress protector goes on like a fitted-sheet protects the sleeping surface of your mattress.
  • Mattress Protector – 5-Sided A 5-Sided protector still goes on like a fitted sheet, but in addition to the mattress surface being protected the waterproof and protective material also covers the sides of the mattress. These are great for small children or in cases where you have two-mattresses side-by-side as in a Split-King scenario. (We had a customer with a Split-King whose child came into their bed, slept in the middle and had an accident. They had the top only protectors and the urine seeped went in-between the mattresses into the sides of them).
  • Full-Encasement Mattress Protectors Full encasement protectors protect all 6-sides of your mattress. They zip-on and offer complete protection. For most people this is not needed, but if there is a concern of bed bugs you’ll want these on both the mattress and box-spring. On many beds they can be a chore to take on/off so we recommend using these in conjunction with a standard mattress protector as well. That way you can strip off the protector easily to wash, while the mattress stays protected from creepy-crawlies.

Not all mattress protection products are created equal. Some inexpensive brands are waterproof and also don’t let air through and can be quite hot. At Gardner’s Mattress and More all of our protectors and encasement products have the same breathable protection material on the underside but the surfaces vary. Our basic protectors have a smooth surface, an upgraded 5-sided protector has an aroma-therapy option (sachets near the top), and we even have ones with a more cottony, cooling surface and extra corner straps.

Don’t forget to protect your pillows as well. More sweat, hair products, make-up, etc. Yuck! Do you travel? Think about how many heads have been sweating into that same pillow. Stop out and see me and we’ll do a Buy-One-Get-One on pillow protectors so you can bring one on the road with you. :)
